Universal Wireless Session Management

The SmartCloud E-RAN solution adopts the enterprise Wi-Fi system architecture for UMTS small cell deployments. This means the SmartCloud E-RAN solution consists of purpose-built enterprise-grade SmartCloud Radio Nodes (SCRN), and introduces a category-defining Services Node architecture where the SmartCloud Services Node (SCSN) is analogous to the Enterprise Wi-Fi Switch.

The SCSN is the central traffic aggregation point where wireless session management is performed for all corresponding mobile devices. It also provides centralized RF and mobility management for the overall cluster of SmartCloud Radio Nodes deployed throughout the enterprise.

The SCSN was designed with mobile access technology evolution in mind, enabling wireless session management of different radio access technologies. For example, the SCSN performs a subset of traditional Radio Network Controller (RNC) functions for the delivery of 3G UMTS services. As the desire to evolve to different radio access technology combinations arises, the SCSN can activate session management functions for alternative wireless access methods without infrastructure changes.

Through this hybrid system architecture, the SCSN is uniquely positioned to provide universal wireless session management for all mobile services inside an enterprise, independent of radio access technology. It allows mobile operators to pre-deploy small cell radio node “real-estate” throughout an enterprise campus while activating various radio access technology combinations as desired.

The SmartCloud E-RAN solution dynamically derives the best attributes out of each radio access technologies. In doing so, mobile operators can now redefine enterprise mobility service offerings and allow end users to transparently access corporate assets via any wireless technology or mobile device.

It represents a common service delivery platform for all wireless services and devices inside the enterprise.
